Editorial Standards
This is how we work. We’d rather you knew, so you can judge what we publish for yourself.
We don’t put something up just because someone sent it in. Wherever we can, we go back to the original: the full video or stream, the actual post, the file itself, not a screenshot of a clip of it. We check dates and context so nothing’s shown out of order or chopped up to mean something it didn’t. For anything important we look for more than one source. If we can’t stand something up, it stays out, or we say plainly that it hasn’t been confirmed.
We keep copies of the original files behind every post, with notes on where they came from and when. That way we can always go back and check, and put things right if we need to.
Facts come first. Where we add our own view, we make it obvious that it’s opinion and not part of the record. You’re very welcome to disagree with it.
We cover what’s done in public, not people’s private lives. So we won’t publish home addresses, or anything that’d help someone find where a person lives. Private phone numbers and emails are out too. So are family members, partners and children who aren’t part of the story, along with medical and other deeply personal details unless they’re central to it and already public. If any of that turns up in original material, we blur it, crop it or cut it.
Some footage and images can be upsetting, or can drag in people who’ve nothing to do with the story. We think carefully before using them. Bystanders and children get blurred, anything that isn’t needed gets cut, and if a post has content some people might find distressing we’ll warn you at the top.
Anyone we write about can reply, and fair replies go on the post itself. The Right of Reply page has the details.
When we get something wrong we fix it and say so. There’s a dated note on the post and an entry on the Corrections page.
People who give us information in confidence stay anonymous. We won’t name them, and we take care that nothing we publish could identify them.
